Getting Started

BMX Basics: Anyone who can ride a bike can race BMX. There is no age limit! Riders are grouped into “classes” based on similar age and skill level. At Silver Dollar BMX, the youngest class is typically 5 & under, while the oldest class is often 36 & over. Each class races 2-3 qualifier “motos” followed by a “main event”, where the race finish is determined. Awards are typically given out for 1st through 3rd place. Awards can be ribbons, trophies, or “track bucks” to be used at the snack bar or future race entry fees.

Bike Requirements: A Basic BMX bike with either 20" or 24" tires is all it takes. Bikes with 16” or 18” wheels are sometimes used by the younger riders. Mountain bikes can also be ridden if they meet the safety guidelines. All of the bolts on the bike must be tight and the chain set to proper tension. Remove all reflectors, kickstand, foot pegs, bar ends, water bottle holders, racks, etc. The handle bar ends must be covered by grips or end caps. Pads are required on the crossbar of the handlebars, stem and top tube of the frame. Lastly, a number plate is required for rider identification (paper or temporary plates are provided for new riders at registration).

Safety Equipment: A helmet must be worn at all times on the track (full-face is recommended). Loaner full-face helmets are available at registration (parents must leave car keys as collateral). A long sleeve shirt and pants must be worn. Gloves are recommended. Safety equipment is available at most bike shops.

American Bicycle Association (ABA) Membership: To race at an ABA sanctioned track, you'll first need to become a member of the American Bicycle Association. There are several types of memberships available.

* One Day Trial Membership (FREE); can only be used once per rider.
* Temporary 30 Day Trial Membership for $25 (costs another $25 for Temporary Conversion to Annual)
* Full One Year Membership, Renewable Each Year ($45 first family member, $40 second family member, $35 third and additional family members)

ABA Membership Benefits: You will receive an official ABA membership card in the mail with your ABA serial number. As a full member, you start earning points for every race you compete in. The better you finish and the more often you race the more points you earn. Throughout the year these points are tallied and at the end of the season you'll earn a ranking according to how you finished. This ranking will then be displayed as your bike number the following season.

Your membership also includes 10 issues of the BMXer Magazine, an exclusive ABA member publication. In it, you can look up your name in the point standings and find out how you rank against the other riders in your area. In addition, the BMXer also keeps you up to date on upcoming events with interviews and stories of the superstars in BMX racing. For much, much more information on getting started and the ABA check out the ABA website at www.ababmx.com.

Questions: You'll still have lots of questions! Just ask! The Track Operator, Track Officials in addition to Registration volunteers are ready to help!

This track operates entirely on the efforts of these volunteers and the great families that participate. Without their work and support, the track would not exist. Silver Dollar BMX is always looking for greater participation and help. If you are interested in volunteering, whether to help with maintenance, or to help on race nights, please stop by registration and talk to one of us. If you are new to BMX and are interested in participating, come check us out on race nights and just ask one of us for information. We would be happy to help you get started at Silver Dollar BMX.
